Chapter Eight
Reid lifted his head, looking at his brothers. It was good to have them all together. They’d come to the old council hall often as children, having made it their private fort. Now that they were older, they still convened there to relax and talk in private. There were no windows in the old section of the castle, not even a little slit. Deep set, antique cushioned chairs were set around a large, intricately carved fireplace. A fire burned brightly, giving the tomblike room light and warmth.
Quinn lounged on the long pillows that lined the red carpeted floor. Kirill sat near the fireplace, resting his chin on his fist as he stared absently at the flames. He smiled occasionally at some of Jarek’s tales of space. Falke sat in a chair to the king’s right. The Commander’s body was stiff with rigid discipline. After a half century of command, he’d become hard and unforgiving. And, only after a few months of knowing Sam, he’d become softer.
Reid noticed how all three of his married brothers seemed to have a contentment about them. They looked happy. Maybe it was because he’d been gone, but he really saw a change in them. The men were in love. Reid wasn’t sure if this disappointed him or made him jealous.
Thinking of Jasmine, he frowned. She’d preoccupied his thoughts since the moment he first met her. His frown deepened and he slouched in his chair. He’d kissed her and she’d looked like she wanted to throw up on him. How could that be? He’d smelled her desire, didn’t he? His gut tightened and he felt as if he was being kicked repeatedly by an unseen force. Maybe the smell hadn’t been for him. Could it be that her arousal wasn’t of his doing? Had she seen someone else? Met someone who did that to her? Made her feel? Reid bit his lip. That last kick went straight to his heart. Too bad it didn’t finish him off.
“Ugh, Reid, stop brooding,” Kirill grumbled. “You’re making my head spin. Just go tell her you like her already.”
Reid frowned and automatically answered, “Who?”
At the word, his brother’s shared a knowing look. Reid knew damned well who. But if Jasmine didn’t like him in such a way, he wasn’t about to announce his interest in her to the world. Wouldn’t his brothers get a kick out of that? The great lover turned down by the one woman he desired most in all his years. Even Reid could grudgingly admit it was poetic justice.
“Oh, I’m sorry, I meant Jasmine,” Kirill said. “I forget you have so many women. Though, if you’re not taken with her, Navid did mention that he ran into her in the hall earlier. He has asked permission to court her--if she’s not already spoken for. I told him I’d ask you first, since she is your ward.”
Navid? Reid stiffened, his face tightening. Navid had seen Jasmine in the hall? Was that smell for Navid, then?
“Reid,” Quinn
